Oftalmología Avanzada
A dedicated ophthalmology center within Colombia’s top-ranked hospital. Founded in 2007 on a single conviction: every patient deserves the same standard of care you would want for your own family.
The Practice
Built for a standard that did not yet exist
Oftalmología Avanzada was founded in 2007 with a clear intention: to build something that did not yet exist in Cali, or much of Colombia — a dedicated ophthalmology center where every diagnostic test, every consultation, and every surgical decision could happen under one roof, governed by a single standard of care. That standard was not defined by what was common in the region. It was defined by what was right for the patient.
From the beginning, the center was embedded within Fundación Valle del Lili — Colombia’s top-ranked hospital, recognized by Newsweek as the best in the country and among the top 150 in the world, and accredited by Joint Commission International, the global benchmark for patient safety. That institutional home was never incidental. It meant access to a tertiary-level surgical complex, a culture of peer-reviewed academic medicine, and the infrastructure of a world-class university hospital — all without asking patients to navigate a fragmented system.
What has evolved since then is the technology, the breadth of the team, and the reach of the patients who seek care here. What has not changed is the founding conviction: that every patient, regardless of where they come from or how they pay, deserves the same quality of care — the same care you would want for your own family.
The Fundación Valle del Lili partnership provides more than a physical location. It provides the clinical infrastructure of a top-ranked academic medical center: trained ophthalmic technicians who manage diagnostic procedures across every patient visit, dedicated scrub nurses for all surgical procedures, a surgical coordinator who manages scheduling across clinical and operating room environments, and specialized optometrists who support complex cases requiring scleral or custom contact lens fitting. For international patients, a five-member bilingual patient office — including two clinical nurses — manages insurance coordination, logistics, and end-to-end care navigation.
THE SPACE
Purpose-built for anterior segment ophthalmology
The center occupies the third floor of Tower One at Fundación Valle del Lili, within one of Latin America’s most recognized hospital complexes. The space is purpose-built for anterior segment ophthalmology: diagnostic suites equipped with the most advanced imaging and measurement technology, a dedicated laser operating room on the second floor for corneal refractive surgery, corneal transplantation, intracorneal ring segments, and crosslinking, and a separate anterior segment laser suite on the third floor for glaucoma and related procedures. Major intraocular surgery is performed in the full operating theaters of Tower Three.
Every consultation room is equipped with high-resolution displays used to walk patients through their own imaging in real time — a deliberate choice that turns diagnosis into education. The center houses technology platforms that are more common in leading North American and European institutions than in Latin America — a reflection of a continuous investment in precision that has defined the practice since its founding.
THE CLINICAL PHILOSOPHY
The same decision you would make for your own family
The guiding principle at Oftalmología Avanzada is straightforward, if uncommon: every clinical decision is made as if the patient were a member of Dr. Ossma’s own family. Not as a metaphor — as a working standard. The question asked before any recommendation is not what the patient wants to hear, but what Dr. Ossma would do if this were his parents sitting in that chair.
That principle has a practical consequence that distinguishes the practice from most surgical centers: the willingness to say no. When a proposed procedure would not deliver a meaningful improvement in the patient’s life, or when the risks outweigh the realistic benefit, the answer is no — and the patient receives a thorough explanation of exactly why, precise enough that they could recognize and refuse the same procedure if offered elsewhere.
The center does not limit itself to the patient’s presenting concern. A full ocular health review is conducted at every visit, diagnosing conditions the patient was unaware of and coordinating onward referral where needed. The patient leaves with a complete picture, not just an answer to their question.
For patients requiring oculoplastic or facial plastic surgery, the practice works in close collaboration with Dr. Andrea Galvis, a dual-certified ophthalmologist and oculoplastic surgeon — ensuring that cases extending beyond anterior segment ophthalmology are managed with the same standard of precision and clinical honesty.
THE TECHNOLOGY
Clinical-grade precision at every stage
From the initial diagnostic evaluation through the operating room, every step of the clinical process is guided by technology platforms selected for a single purpose: to reduce the gap between what is diagnostically knowable and what the surgeon can act on. The center has consistently been among the first in the region to adopt precision technologies — not for the sake of novelty, but because better measurement produces better surgical outcomes.
Diagnostic Intelligence
The only two AI-guided automated refraction units from Topcon available in Colombia, reducing variability in pre-operative measurements. High-resolution OCT-based corneal topography for sub-micron mapping of the corneal surface. Every patient’s imaging is reviewed in real time on high-resolution consultation displays — turning the diagnostic process into a shared decision.
2017 — First high-resolution OCT-based corneal topography in Colombia
Refractive Laser Platform
High-speed excimer laser coupled with a femtosecond corneal laser for refractive surgery — the combination that enables bladeless, all-laser correction of myopia, hyperopia, and astigmatism. The femtosecond platform creates corneal flaps with sub-micron precision, while the excimer reshapes the corneal surface with speed and accuracy that minimizes tissue exposure.
2015 — First femtosecond laser corneal refractive surgery in Western Colombia
Surgical Visualization
3D visualization microscopy for all intraocular procedures — a standard more common in leading North American and European centers than in Latin America. Integrated diagnostic platforms guide lens calculations and surgical planning with data from the patient’s own pre-operative imaging. Femtosecond laser cataract surgery replaces manual incisions with image-guided, software-controlled precision.
2011 — First femtosecond laser cataract surgery in Colombia
Premium IOL Portfolio
A range of advanced intraocular lens platforms selected to match each patient’s anatomy, visual demands, and lifestyle. Trifocal lenses for patients who want to eliminate glasses entirely. Non-diffractive extended depth-of-focus lenses for those who prioritize contrast quality. Phakic lenses for high-myopia patients who are not candidates for corneal laser surgery. Each technology was introduced in this practice years before reaching broader availability.
2003 — First dual-optic accommodating IOL (worldwide)
2003 — First ICL phakic lens in Colombia | First PanOptix trifocal in Colombia
2020 — First Vivity EDOF in Latin America
